Adventures from the 2010 Dakar Rally

Team Hummer stage 13
January 18, 2010 - 8:36am -

The podium presentation was held yesterday at La Rural Buenos Aires.  All finishing competitors have a chance to drive their vehicles trough the Dakar stage.  The competitors that finish higher in the race go first.

The stands were full of cheering fans, it was a great atmosphere.  It was so hot out there; Kevin and I tried to find somewhere to hide from the sun.  We managed to sneak in to the Driver’s lounge where there was food and it was air-conditioned.  As soon as we saw the VW’s go to the Podium so did we.

January 16, 2010 - 4:43am -

The special from San Rafael to Santa Rosa was the last real opportunity for racers to strike and shake up the overall standings.  The two front-runners are battling it out, only a couple of minutes separate them.

The drive from the province of Mendoza to Santa Rosa was amazing.  Driving through wine country, seeing all the beautiful bodegas.  That quickly stopped and the flat land came.  The drive became long and boring after that.  Having to listen to Kyle’s iPod for another drive was brutal.

January 15, 2010 - 4:00am -

Today’s special from San Juan to San Rafael was the longest of the rally.  The competitors had two specials and two liaisons.  The terrain was reminiscent of a Parker 425 race.  There were river washes, large rocks and big whoops.

January 13, 2010 - 6:02pm -

We said farewell to Chile today as the caravan of race and support vehicles made their way back to Argentina.  We are in the home stretch towards Buenos Aires with tough terrain and stages still to come.

January 12, 2010 - 7:27pm -

Goodbye to the Atacama Desert, hello to fast windy roads and mountain landscapes.  With backdrops reminiscent of the eastern part of the United States, the WRC specialists enjoyed a day that best suited their vehicles and driving styles.

January 11, 2010 - 9:22pm -

The Copiapo-La Serena Special marked the last day that the Dakar Rally competitors would race on the Atacama Deserts.  The special was shortened due to expected bad weather the day before.  The Special looped around the west side of Copiapo heading towards La Serena/Santiago.  After the special was done the competitors had to travel on a long liaison of 300 plus kilometers of highway driving to the La Serena Bivouac.

January 11, 2010 - 11:36am -

We are at the finish line for Stage 9 right now... online tracking says Robby has finished but we haven't seen him yet.  There is some distance between the official end and where we are waiting, near the highway.

From what we know the Vanguard Hummer is still out there. Last we heard they were fixing a bent air jack.  They had gotten stuck and when they were pulled out, the air jack was damaged.

Earlier in the day, Robby got stuck and the Vanguard Hummer had helped pull him out.

More to come...

January 10, 2010 - 6:47pm -

Today we made our way back to Copiapo from Antofagasta.  When we arrived in Antofagasta days earlier we spotted a Mc Donald’s!  Our plan this morning leaving the Bivouac was to stop by Mc Donald’s on our way back to Copiapo.  We parked the car and headed into the restaurant.  To our big disappointment the breakfast menu was tiny croissants, a ham and cheese sandwich and a ham and Avocado sandwich.  That was it, no Mc Muffins! No Big Breakfasts! No Hash browns! I miss Los Angeles.

January 8, 2010 - 5:35pm -

The special between Iquique and Antofagasta was the longest special in the rally.  With over 600 kilometers of total driving including short liaisons, this special promised to be one for Robby to gain some time on the leaders.

January 8, 2010 - 3:33am -

Inquique is the most northern town we will visit this Dakar Rally.  The special today consisted of a 418-kilometer journey that is reminiscent of a high African desert special.  Robby was ready and eager to start the special as he felt he could gain time on his rivals and climb on the overall classification.
